National Recognition for Lux Work
MiresBall garners top awards from American Association of Museums
San Diego, CA, June 14, 2006MiresBall, one of the largest independent brand design firms in Southern
California, recently won two first-place awards and one second-place award from the American Association
of Museums (AAM) for its creative work for the Lux Art Institute. This is the fifth consecutive year
that MiresBall has been recognized by the AAM.
AAM’s annual Museum Publications Design Competition acknowledges excellence in the design of museum
collateral and publications. This year’s competition drew more than 1,000 entries from a who’s who
of national museums. Lux’s three top-place awards make it the most recognized museum in its size
classand the only local winner. Other multiple-award winners include the Dallas Center for
Contemporary Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Smithsonian Institute and the Library of Congress.
The Lux Art Institute won for best poster and event invitation for museum budgets under $500,000,
as well as a second place prize for supplementary materials.
“MiresBall continues to beautifully communicate the vision of Lux,” said Reesey Shaw, executive
director of the Lux Art Institute. “Since 1998 they have helped shine a light on our institute
locally and put us on the map nationally. Sharing the artistic stage with some of the country’s
most prestigious museums is a huge honor.”
The Lux Art Institute is an innovative museum under development in North San Diego County. Through
a groundbreaking artists-in-residence program, Lux will offer the public a unique insight into art
and the creative process. Once complete in late 2006, Lux will be the only institution in the country
that includes an onsite residence for artists.
“Working Lux has been extremely rewarding for me, both as an entrepreneur and a designer. From a
business perspective, I am continually reminded of the incredible commitment it takes to bring a
vision like this to reality. As a designer, I relish the challenge of creating world-class materials
on a modest not-for-profit budget,” explained John Ball, principal and creative director of MiresBall.
As a founding board member, Ball has worked closely with Lux to successfully promote the Institute
through a variety of evocative materials, including brochures, newsletters, a website, a documentary-style
film and event invitations. The collective efforts of John Ball and his creative team at MiresBall have
helped Lux effectively communicate its unique concept and personality, as well as attract a committed
group of volunteers and donors.

About Lux Art Institute
Titled “institute” and not “museum,” Lux’s concept is both dynamic and novel: to foster the creation of
art inspired by Southern California’s natural habitat.
Lux attracts nationally and internationally recognized artists to the region for its artist-in-residence
program and will be the only institution in the country with a residence for the artist as part of the
facility. While onsite, artists will produce commissioned works inspired by the natural world.
Lux will also foster insights into the creative process by staging opportunities for active dialogue
between visitors and resident artists. Currently, Lux’s education outreach program, “The Valise Project:
A Portable Museum,” brings original art to area classrooms and uses art as a springboard for creative
thought. The Lux Art Institute is under construction in Encinitas with a temporary building on-site at
1550 South El Camino Real. For more information, visit www.luxartinstitute.org.
