Brand Design
A Banner Year for MiresBall
MiresBall reaches new heights in 2006 and announces expansion of team for 2007

SAN DIEGO, January 3, 2007 — MiresBall, one of the largest independent brand design firms in Southern California, reached new financial—and creative—heights in 2006 with a 43% increase in billings, to more than $6 million. The impressive performance comes on the heels of a 20% increase in billings in 2005.

Fueling this growth, the firm signed on several marquee clients, including Black & Decker, Creative Nail Design (CND) and Shure Incorporated, a global leader in audio electronics. MiresBall also embarked on major brand initiatives for several existing clients in 2006. Most notably, the firm took on eight times as many projects for local giant Qualcomm, including brand development for a major wireless platform, and orchestrated the most successful product launch in Taylor Guitar’s 31-year history.

In addition to financial success, 2006 was rewarding for MiresBall in terms of the quality and scale of new projects.

John Ball, partner and creative director, explains, “Over the last 18 months, we have competed at a very high level for projects—often against well-known national firms—and consistently won.”

Black & Decker, for instance, selected MiresBall to refine the identity and packaging system of America’s best-selling lockset. And when Creative Nail Design, a San Diego-based leader in professional hand and foot care, decided to revitalize its brand, it selected MiresBall.

“We searched extensively throughout North America for a firm with a world-class combination of brand strategy and design expertise,” says Jacquie Johnson, CND vice president of marketing. “MiresBall scored high on both fronts.”

To strengthen its capabilities, MiresBall expanded its design team in 2006 by hiring eight new employees, including four new senior designers—Dylan Jones, Kathya Fredericks, Beth Folkerth and Lauren Bruhn—and designers Ashley Kerns and Jason Moll (formerly firm interns). Jones and Fredericks bring extensive experience in brand identity and print advertising design, while Folkerth and Bruhn offer expertise in environmental and package design.

MiresBall also added Olivia Heeren to its team of account supervisors, an industry veteran from Publicis & Hal Riney and Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

Finally, to handle the growing need for in-house writing, MiresBall welcomed David Fried, a journalist with experience writing for a wide range of national and local publications, including the New York Daily News, Publishers Weekly and the North County Times.

“It’s exciting to welcome so much new and varied talent,” said partner and creative director Scott Mires. “With an expanded team, we’re better prepared to handle larger-scale projects and respond to an increasing demand for our work.”
